Theodore Roosevelt
Republican
Imperialist

Occupation: Governor of New York. Formerly Assistant Secretary of the Navy as well as former U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel in the Spanish-American War

Position on issue: Imperialist, In favor of taking control of lands like the Philippines acquired in the Spanish American War. I believe that the U.S. can better the other nations by improving their moral standards. I believe that an acquisition can only be made free of imperialist influence after it is evident that a territory has met an acceptable moral majority in their population and has proven to be worthy of self-government. I believe that to strengthen our navy, we must have bases all over the world.

Reasons for interest: Favored the idea of expansion in order improve other countries moral standards
Fought in the Spanish-American War to help the oppressed native people of the islands
As a former navy officer, I understand the importance of a strong and wide spread military force at sea
